Take A Closer Look Project

Description of Project

Take a Closer Look is a comprehensive educational program that will increase the awareness and response of justice professionals to elders and individuals with disabilities who are victims of abuse and domestic violence.

Justice professionals - whether criminal or civil - who participate in this training program will expand their knowledge and awareness of vulnerable adults.  By "taking a closer look", they will learn the appropriate steps to better protect and respond to these vulnerable citizens.  A closer look enables justice professionals to:

  • Appreciate the dynamics of abuse in later life and among people with disabilities
  • Recognize adult victims of abuse, neglect, exploitation and/or domestic violence
  • Respond in ways that will safeguard the victim
  • Make justice programs truly accessible
  • Involve appropriate local area services to achieve a coordinated response and an effective safety or recovery plan
  • Acquire the knowledge to be more effective in working with vulnerable adults
  • Increase successful prosecutions of abusers
  • Identify and respond to situations where guardianship wards are victims/potential victims
  • Better coordinate all elements within the local justice system
