About CAD

The Director of the CAD                                                                      Jean Sherman, CAD Director

Jean Sherman, Ed.D., R.N. has a doctorate in adult education and is also a registered nurse. Her UM career began at the CAD in 1993; she has served as its director since 2002. The mother of a young man with a severe developmental disability, Dr. Sherman has a particular passion for issues pertaining to the community inclusion and rights of people with disabilities and the support of aging family caregivers. She also spent 12 years in the Aging Network, (during which time she directed an adult day care center, a focal point senior center, and was the assistant director at a local area agency on aging). Consequently, she also has an abiding interest in elders, especially those who are vulnerable and frail, and the need to educate family and professional caregivers. Her interest in protecting vulnerable adults is evidenced in her chairing of the Miami-Dade Coalition for the Prevention of Abuse of Vulnerable Adults.

Dr. Sherman has made over 60 presentations (including several keynote addresses) on a variety of issues relating to the health and welfare of elders and disabled adults, at local, regional and national conferences. Many of these topics spring from the host of community educational and training projects she has conducted or been involved with during her time at the CAD. Similarly, a sample of her achievements and recent affiliations illustrate her professional concerns. Dr. Sherman: 1) has created a curriculum and web site on future planning for parents of individuals with developmental disabilities; 2) has authored several educational curricula on abuse, neglect and exploitation of elders and people with disabilities for community justice professionals; 3) is a long-time member of the APD, Family Care Council, Area 10; is a member of the APD, Quality Improvement Steering Committee in Area 10; and, 5) is a member of the Statewide Inclusion Council of Volunteer Florida. Importantly, Dr. Sherman is also an integral member of the faculty of the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service (UCEDD) at the UM Mailman Center for Child Development (MCCD), in the Department of Pediatrics, where she is the LEND Nursing Director.
